FIGURES OF SPEECH



Specific features of Literature and poetry is called Figure of speech that tell us more information. It also uses in MOVIE dialogue and in our daily life also . Certainly these devices are present in almost every corner of life.

1- ALLITERATION

Alliteration is that the REPETITION OF the start SOUNDS OF NEIGHBORING WORDS.

EXAMPLES :

SHE SELLS SEASHELLS.

WALTER WONDERED WHERE WINNIE WAS.

NICK NEEDED NEW NOTEBOOKS.

FRED FRIED FROGS' LEGS ON FRIDAY.

2- ANAPHORA

Anaphora may be a TECHNIQUE WHERE SEVERAL PHRASES OR VERSES BEGIN WITH an equivalent WORD OR WORDS.

EXAMPLES

I CAME, I SAW, I CONQUERED. - JULIUS CAESAR

MAD WORLD! MAD KINGS! MAD COMPOSITION! –KING JOHN II, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

IT WAS THE BEST OF TIME, IT WAS THE WORST OF TIME, IT WAS THE AGE OF WISDOMs, IT WAS THE Era OF FOOLISHNESS. - A TALE OF TWO CITIES, CHARLES DICKENS

WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE; WITH Donation FOR ALL; WITH Determination IN THE RIGHT. - ABRAHAM LINCOLN

WE SHALL NOT FLAG OR FAIL. WE SHALL continue TO the top ... WE SHALL NEVER SURRENDER. - WINSTON CHURCHILL

3- IRONY

IRONY OCCURS WHEN there is a MARKED CONTRAST BETWEEN what's SAID AND what's MEANT, OR BETWEEN APPEARANCE AND REALITY.

EXAMPLES:

• "HOW NICE!" SHE SAID, When I TOLD HER I HAD to do extra work ALL the WEEKEND. (VERBAL IRONY)

• A TRAFFIC Inspector  was  SUSPENDED FOR Breaking Traffic rules. (SITUATIONAL IRONY)

•  Everyone knew that THE TITANIC an UNSINKABLE BUT  it SANK ON ITS FIRST VOYAGE. (SITUATIONAL IRONY)

•  I don’t understand,WHEN all the people knows  THE KILLER IS HIDING behind the wall,  IN A SCARY MOVIE, BUT THE hero DOes NOT. (DRAMATIC IRONY)

4- SIMILE

A SIMILE is a COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO different  THINGS USING THE WORDS "As"--- "AS." Or Like

EXAMPLES:

AS SLIPPERY AS AN EEL

LIKE PEAS IN A POD

AS BLIND AS A BAT

• EATS LIKE A PIG

AS WISE AS AN OWL

5- METAPHOR

A METAPHOR is a COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO different  THINGS without  USING THE WORDS "As"--- "AS." Or Like

EXAMPLES:

• HEART OF STONE

• TIME IS MONEY

• THE WORLD IS A STAGE

• SHE'S A NIGHT OWL

• HE'S AN OGRE

6- ONOMATOPOEIA

ONOMATOPOEIA is literary device that is used  FOR A WORD THAT seems like WHAT it's DESCRIBING or  in other words it is used fir sound words

EXAMPLES:

• WHOOSH

• SPLAT

• BUZZ

• CLICK

7- PERSONIFICATION

PERSONIFICATION figure of speech is used when we want to GIVES HUMAN QUALITIES TO NON-LIVING THINGS OR IDEAS.

EXAMPLES:

• THE FLOWERS NODDED.

• THE SNOWFLAKES DANCED.

• THE THUNDER GRUMBLED.

• THE FOG CREPT IN.

• THE WIND HOWLED.

8- Hyperbole

Hyperbole is a literary device that is used to show extreme exaggeration to stress or emphasize a particular quality or feature.

• I have a million things to do.

• This suitcase weighs a ton.

• This room is an ice-box.

• I’m too poor to pay attention.

9- Paradox

A paradox is a literary device that seems  to be self-contradictory but actually reveals something that is truthful.

• ram has to spend money to save it.

• Whatever I’ve learned is that I know nothing.

• The King has to be cruel to be kind.

• Things get worse before they get better.

• The only rule is to ignore all rules.

10- Oxymoron

An oxymoron may be a figure of speech that connects two opposing ideas, usually in two-word phrases, to make a contradictory effect.

• open secret

• Alone together

• true lies

• controlled chaos

• pretty ugly
